Untitled, installation with 5 7″ LCD screens, 5 infinite loops + audio (00’20” – 00’30” each), cables, red tube lights. Installation view at Sugarfree (2005), Netwerk, Aalst, Belgium.
This untitled installation was made for the Sugarfree group show at Netwerk, Aalst (Belgium) in 2005. It marked my first 3D animated work.
At the far end of one of Netwerk’s industrial spaces, I installed five small LCD tv screens, each playing a short, infinite loop of a rotating shape – part meteorite, part unknown particle – each accompanied by an individual, soft sound.
The visitor had to traverse the uninviting dark space to get to the installation, which was lit with red tube lights. All of the cables and wires were a visible part of the work, hanging in plain sight. The screens were covered with cut blue filters. It appeared at the same time high-tech but improvised, and ultramodern but in disarray.
I wanted the installation to resemble a monitoring station on a space ship: the videos suggesting a continuous stream from a place of unknown scale – are we looking at something from outer space or something microscopic?
The audio has been lost over time, and of the five loops, I only recovered four.
Note from 2026: I would love to make a new iteration of this work.
